GREE Inc. (TYO: 3632), Japan’s leading social network service (SNS), released a press release yesterday with new details on its plan to offer a “borderless” social gaming platform that includes: single sign-on for users, a global payment solution, and “a series of robust out-of-network cross promotional opportunities.”

GREE has already established itself as one of the largest social gaming platforms in the world and its expansion plans are an attempt to challenge Facebook and Zynga as the dominant player. GREE’s network consists of a “high-engagement player base of over 150 million registered gamers worldwide, and the ability to reach a relevant social graph crossing both iOS and Android™ users.”

“This new GREE platform continues to show the commitment we have to building a truly global, free-to-play ecosystem for mobile developers. Our goal is to offer the best social gaming experience to players around the world. GREE worldwide has the largest cross-platform network and this is a step closer to our goal of reaching one billion users.”
Yoshikazu Tanaka, CEO and Founder, GREE.

While the company is very profitable — in FY 2011 ending June 30 the company generated US$$865 million in revenue and US$235 million in net income — it’s almost entirely focused on mobile social games for the Japanese consumer. The company is now looking to move aggressively beyond its domestic market and challenge global social gaming leader Zynga which is the leading supplier of games for Facebook which has 800 million users and Facebook Mobile which has reached 350 million active users .

The new GREE platform will provide developers worldwide with a seamless iOS and Android integration process, as well as rich analytics tools. It is expected to be rolled out in Summer 2013.
